Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 upgrade paths

Installing and configuring a development PC with Windows operating system, Visual Studio, SQL Server, Sharepoint, and so on takes time, if you need to do it from scratch. Now that Windows 8 is here, I've received questions on the possible upgrade paths.

Personally, I believe in clean installations on workstations, but in server environments, this isn't always an option (say, you were upgrading your line AD domain controller). I was recently browsing the Technet blogs, and ran into this useful article about Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 upgrade paths. For instance, can you simply upgrade you Windows 7 Professional to Windows 8 Professional? Yes. Or, can you upgrade your Windows Server 2008 64-bit to Windows Server 2012? Yes.
