Microsoft has been busy updating the Office application model to be cloud and web friendly, and just a couple of days ago, they announced that the codenamed "Napa" development tools for Office 2013 new application model would be ready.
Briefly put, the new thing in Office 2013 (and SharePoint 2013) application model is that you now build those applications using with technologies: HTML, CSS and JavaScript. In the previous versions, you could use C# and .NET for the work to create add-ins. Also, Microsoft is about to open a store for Office applications, so that you could purchase them from a global store, just like you can do with Windows 8 Modern UI applications (store apps) and Windows Phone applications.
