Windows “Blue” remarks

You might have heard rumors about the Windows "Blue" version, which would – as the rumors have it – an update to the user interface of Windows 8. Of course, there's a lot of speculation about this and how it would affect the way Windows 8 is used, but only time will tell.

Now, Microsoft has officially confirmed working on the product version in a blog post, and says thus:

"With a remarkable foundation of products in market and a clear view of how we will evolve the company, product leaders across Microsoft are working together on plans to advance our devices and services, a set of plans referred to internally as 'Blue.'"

Though we don't yet have information on what is being planned for us, but from a .NET/HTML developer perspective, I have a hard time believing that all those touch-optimized Windows 8 store applications ("Modern" UI) would go away. Instead, I think they will bring some desktop-like features to them (the ability to snap more applications into one screen, and support for multiple monitors, etc.), which is good.

From a developer point of view, and as a C# and HTML developer, I don't see any reason in stopping your existing plans or existing projects to develop Windows 8 store applications. We might get new APIs once "Blue" is here, but in my opinion, the design ideas behind Moden UI apps are so strong, that it's very unlikely that the Modern UI would go completely away (as some rumors suggest). Even on a traditional desktop PC, I think the Modern UI and the Windows 8 start screens are useful.
