Hypertext Transfer Protocol version 2 is coming to a web server near you

The current HTTP protocol version 1.1 has been to norm for years, but oftentimes, the current de-facto version is said to be resource-hungry. Partially for this, and other performance reasons, an IETF working group for HTTPbis ("bis" is French for "again") has been formed, and the task of the group is to come up with the 2.0 version of the HTTP protocol.

Shortly put, any changes in the HTTP protocol will affect a large number of client devices, software, servers and networking equipment. A bit or millisecond saved when using the new protocol version translates easily into terabytes or days of saved bandwidth and time – something worth thinking.

Now, as a developer, you should already started getting acquainted with the new protocol version. Since the new protocol specification is currently a draft, even weekly updates are possible. At this writing, version 04 of the draft is the latest, but if you are reading this blog post later, further numbers might be available.
