Where are your Windows Phone backups stored?

Microsoft updates the Windows Phone operating system regularly, and thus you've very likely updated your phone OS already several times. When you update (be it Windows Phone 7 on Zune or Windows Phone 8 directly with the built-in app in Windows 8), the update process takes a backup of your phone's data first.

However, nowhere in the UI can you actually find the information where this backup is stored. Luckily, the data goes inside your user profile, and for example on my machine, the storage location is:

C:\Users\jani.jarvinen\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update

Below this folder, you can find one or more subfolders with GUID values (numbers and letters), and below that a folder called RestorePoint. This is where the backup data resides.

So, if you ever want to take a backup of this backup (which sounds like a sound idea), then by all means take a copy of this folder and everything inside it.
