How are Windows 10 desktop computers named by default?

In Windows 8.x operating system versions, new machines that you just installed got pretty cryptic names starting with the letters "WIN" and suffixed with random letters and numbers. In Windows 10, things are getting better, and now new desktop machines (non-server OS editions) have a more approachable default names.
These names start with the word "DESKTOP" followed by a dash (hyphen) and short set of random characters and numbers. For instance: "DESKTOP-TKSF21".
Tip: if you are working with the command-line (cmd.exe) or PowerShell, you can simply type "hostname" and press Enter to see the current name of the computer.
