What does Windows ODX support mean?

When you copy files between two networked resources, your own computer acts as an intermediate in the data transfers. However, this is rather inefficient, because three computers are actually used to pass the bits back and forth. For larger files, it would be more efficient to transfer data directly between the two servers.

This is specifically what Windows ODX (or Offloaded Data Transfers) is for. This technology is supported for a couple of the latest Windows Server versions, and with select hardware. For example, several Synology's NAS boxes already support Windows ODX, which is a great thing especially if you are working with virtualization.

Operating system must be at least Windows Server 2012 or Windows 8 to support ODX. Naturally, later versions will do fine, as well.

Hope this helps!
