Understanding spotfixes to the NTFS file system

You might receive events with the ID 98 from the source "Ntfs (Microsoft-Windows-Ntfs)" in your Windows Event Log that display text similar to the following:

Volume C: (\Device\HarddiskVolume1) needs to be taken offline for a short time to perform a Spot Fix.  Please run "CHKDSK /SPOTFIX" locally via the command line, or run "REPAIR-VOLUME " locally or remotely via PowerShell.

The text refers to a technology called spot fixing (spotfix) in the NTFS file system, which is a new feature introduced with Windows 8.

A spot fix is a "Precise and rapid correction" to the file system, instead of a previous, often long-running scan of the complete volume.

Of course, all disk errors should be taken seriously, but most can still be fixed and remedied.
