Microsoft acquired GitHub in June, what to expect in the future?

Microsoft announced its plan to acquire GitHub in June 2018. Many developers wondered what it would mean for open-source projects and independent developers who rely on GitHub daily.
So far, Microsoft has kept GitHub operating independently and even strengthened its position as the main platform for open source. Many of Microsoft's own products, including Visual Studio Code, .NET Core, and TypeScript are all examples projects hosted there.
In the long run, we can probably expect tighter integration between GitHub and Microsoft's developer tools:
- Seamless sign-in with Azure AD and Microsoft accounts.
- Better pipelines between GitHub and Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS).
- Improved visibility from Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code directly into GitHub issues and pull requests.
For developers, this acquisition is a reminder that Git and open collaboration have become mainstream in the Microsoft ecosystem. If history is any guide, the integration will be gradual and mostly additive.
