What is Windows Update Delivery Optimization?

Windows Update Delivery Optimization is a Windows 10 feature that helps download updates and Microsoft Store applications more efficiently by using peer-to-peer transfers. Instead of every machine downloading the same content from Microsoft, PCs participating in the Windows Update Delivery Optimization (WUDO) can share pieces of updates with each other.

By default, Delivery Optimization is enabled and can use other PCs on your local network. You can also allow it to talk to PCs on the Internet, or turn it off completely.

WUDO settings are configured in the Windows 10 Settings application. The configure location is:

Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Advanced options > Delivery Optimization

From this settings screen, you can:

  • Allow downloads from PCs on your local network and/or the Internet.
  • Limit the bandwidth used for uploads and downloads.
  • See network transfer activity (how much you have downloaded from/uploaded to others).

In domain environments, Group Policy or MDM can control these settings centrally. Delivery Optimization is useful when you have many Windows 10 machines on the same network; it reduces Internet bandwidth usage and can speed up update distribution.
