Azure stops allowing expansions to old v1–v4 VMs soon

Microsoft sent a reminder just few days ago to Azure virtual machine (VM) users that possibly have older VMs running in their subscriptions. The messaging tells that expansion (as in: new VMs, more capacity on existing ones; Microsoft calls this "capacity growth restrictions" officially) will not be allowed after this month (July 2026), and old VMs of version 1 to version 4 are affected.

Put another way, if you have old v1–v4 VM running, they continue to run, but you cannot expand their use, or create new VMs of those versions anymore after a few days. The following VM sizes are affected:

• Compute optimized: F, Fs, Fsv2
• General purpose: D, Ds, Dv2, Dsv2, Av2, Amv2, B, Bs
• Memory optimized: G, Gs
• Storage optimized: Ls, Lsv2.

So, it's worth checking which VMs you are currently running, and if any of them are older, start planning for an eventual migration.
